Examining the Correlation Between Clinician-Reported Outcomes and Patient-Reported Outcomes by Race and Ethnicity in Atopic Dermatitis Patients

Atopic dermatitis (AD) presents differently among diverse patient populations which may affect its evaluation and treatment. In individuals with darker skin-phenotypes, the increased melanin pigment might impact the visibility of erythema, leading to a misclassification of AD severity. Current education on assessing AD in clinical trials and practice tends to be biased towards patients with lighter skin-phenotypes. Researchers hypothesized that clinician-reported outcome measures (ClinROMs) may not be as effective in assessing AD in patients with skin of color compared to those with lighter skin-phenotypes. This was investigated through a prospective study in both children and adults with AD to determine if ClinROMs show weaker correlations with established patient-reported outcome measures across different races or ethnicities.
